This 5lb hookjaw rewarded Bret Martin's brother, Monte, for his efforts! Nice Fish, Monte!

June 11th thru 13th, 2010 - by Bret Martin

On 6/11/2010 I met my brother Monte and his long time friend, Dave, for some fishing. I got to the lake in time to launch the boat just as it was getting dark. As tempting as it was to get fishing right away I figured we had 17 hours of day light on Saturday and then as many hours on Sunday as I could get in so we set up camp and talked around a camp fire for a while.

We were out at 4:20 AM on Saturday with much anticipation of hooking a couple of large browns during the morning bite. We marked fish that were
very large but they were running fairly deep at about 50-60 feet. We fished our most popular lures that have had much success in catching large fish here. The morning hours passed quickly without even a strike. At around 8:30 AM we set up one rod on the surface one rod on lead core and another on the down rigger. Fish were still marking anywhere from 30-80 feet. I thought for sure one of the rods had it covered but to no avail. We took time out for lunch for about 45 minutes and back to it. Although the fishing wasn't hot we had some fun time in the sun on a beautiful day for a boat ride. I figured the evening bite must be the happening bite.

We had run across a couple other  fisherman that we recognize as being some premier brown trout fisherman. Although they had each caught a couple of fish none of the three of them had gotten anything over 3 pounds. We took one more break from the boat for dinner and got right back to it. Again the anticipation of a large brown for the evening was high.

Just as our hopes were all but dashed at about 9:30 PM I heard the long awaited phrase shouted out. FISH ON!! I could tell by the bend in the rod it wasn't a dink. After a short fight Monte had a nice hookjaw in the net. The hooks dropped out of his mouth just as he was netted, nice net job Dave. After some weight and measurements were done and some photos taken the 5# hookjaw was released unharmed.

Sunday we were out by 4:25 AM and fished until shortly after noon without a bite. With a total of 67.5 rod hours on the boat one could say the fishing was anything but hot. Although the fishing was off it was still a great time. The weather couldn't have been nicer for camping and riding around the lake in the boat. If only one fish was caught at least it was 5#.

Behold...the Cascade Mountains of Oregon!!!
