Hey TTH'ers! My
wife and I headed to our favorite lake for the weekend to try our luck for browns and macks. We've targeted browns here quite
a bit but have never landed one, so I was very anxious to try all the things I've been thinking about over the winter! Our
last trip was in November where we did real good on Macks...but I wanted a brownie!
We hit the shallows on saturday,
working the 15-20' depth range. The water was about 1.5 degrees warmer near the shoreline, but still very cold at 38 degrees.
On our first pass near Simax the downrigger clip pops off...woohoo! I was totally not expecting it, but I reeled in a nice
5 lb hen! My first crescent brown!!! We quickly released her and got our stuff back in the water. Almost immediately and before
I could get my line hooked to the dr clip, I had another one on...but it didn't last, spit the hook. Okay, this is the hot
lure! Too bad I lost it a half hour later on a snag, doh!

A beautiful 5 lb hen! Way to crack the 5 lb mark, Dan! Awesome! |
Well, we trolled for a few more hours with
nothing to show for it except losing many many lures! So we decided to try our luck with lakers and headed to our favorite
vector from rainbow point towards boyscout. We marked a few fish in the 120' range, but they weren't interested. We decided
to take a nap back at the cabin and then troll for browns in the late afternoon. We managed one more small brown trolling
in about 10' water and that was it for saturday. We were pretty stoked and had a really good day!
Sunday morning we
did the drill again and managed another small brown right off simax. A young bald eagle tried to "steal" it from us while
reeling it in, but we managed to safely release it. It was really cool to see that eagle swoop down with it's claws open!
Another nice brown for Dan! |

He saved this one from a swooping Eagle! That would've been quite the sight to see! |
About mid-morning Sunday
we switched to lakers again and finally managed a nice 12.5 lb FIGHTER! This was one of the scrappiest macks i've played,
he didn't want to come up!

We hooked another mack soon after that,
but it spit the hook. I wanted to stay longer, but the boss called it and we headed back to portland around noon. All
together a great weekend for Carrie and I...we finally got a crescent brown! See ya on the water!
